Germany's second-largest airline company, airberlin, was founded in 1978 and is based in Berlin. The company has a workforce of 9,200 employees. In 2011, the airline carried 35.3 million passengers. Besides airberlin, NIKI, the Austrian airline (49.9%) and Belair, the Swiss airline (49%), also belong to the airberlin Group. airberlin also took over the TUIfly city service with the start of the 2009/2010 winter schedule. In December 2011, airberlin entered into a strategic partnership with Etihad Airways. On 20th March 2012 airberlin became a full member of the leading global airline alliance oneworld. Through membership of oneworld, airberlin customers will gain access to an unrivalled global network of partners, which includes some of the best airlines in the world. airberlin adds another 70 destinations to the oneworld network, making a total of 800 destinations in 150 countries around the world.
