New service to the home of Greek legends from the Viking city of Aarhus

Fourth new route from Aarhus for 2017; direct flights to Preveza for the Ionian island of Ithaca

“The best start to the year ever”, is the comment from Aarhus Airport, welcoming the news that it will host another new destination direct from the Airport for summer 2017 as weekly flights take off from 20 May to Preveza in Greece.

Preveza is gateway to tiny Ithaca, a small destination with big history, nestled between the larger islands of Kefalonia and Lefkas in the Ionian Sea to the east of mainland Greece.    It is the legendary island home of heroic Odysseus and features extensively in Greek mythology.   Now Ithaca will be the destination of choice for thousands of Danish tour operator customers heading to the island’s exceptional sunshine record, idyllic beaches, quiet coves and warm turquoise waters.

Flights will operate weekly on Saturdays by DAT (Danish Air Transport) Airbus A320 between mid-May and mid-October, on a 3 hour journey, departing Aarhus at 0705 and returning at 1410.  Ithaca is served by Preveza’s Aktion Airport, where passengers will reach the island by coach and a short boat transfer from Lefkas.

“As European Capital of Culture in 2017, we are warmly welcoming many thousands of visitors coming here to our city this year, but are also thrilled to grow the range of outward destinations that eager travellers and hard-working Aarhusians can take advantage of”, explained David Surley, Aarhus Airport’s Head of Airline Relations.  “Århus Charter is a local, high-quality and popular tour operator and Ithaca is the fifth destination for them in 2017 in addition to Madeira, Cyprus, Mallorca and Tenerife, all operated by Danish airline DAT.  They are expanding here owing to very high demand by Aarhus-based customers”.

Preveza is the fourth new route for Aarhus announced to-date, taking-off in 2017.  Czech Airlines commences 4 x weekly service from Prague in May, SAS Scandinavian Airlines start Malaga flights in June, while just this week Ryanair announced new twice-weekly service from Gdansk beginning in October.   “We had an incredible 2016 with 22% international traffic growth, way above the Danish average, so these new routes already coming our way for 2017 are a truly fantastic start for Aarhus at a time when the city is growing very, very quickly as one of Scandinavia’s largest population centres”, said Surley.
