About The Airport

Honduras' new capital airport, Palmerola International opened its doors in December 2021 and has replaced the heavily constrained Toncontin Airport in Tegucigalpa. The airport is located aprox. 75 km northwest of Tegucigalpa, 8 km south of Comayagua and 170 km southeast of San Pedro Sula at the country’s main four lane highway (CA-5). With this recently renewed and expanded road connection the airport covers the largest catchment area in Honduras. First phase design capacity is 1.4mppa at IATA optimum service level. The airport operates 24/7 and is able to serve aircraft up to category E.

2023 passenger numbers are forecasted to be around 30% higher than Toncontin's 2019 numbers due to more airlines, more destinations and more passenger demand.

Palmerola International Airport (IATA: XPL) is operated by the Honduran concessionaire Grupo EMCO who is supported by its long term partner Munich Airport International from Germany that covers all airport related tasks including the operation.
