AIA's Passenger Traffic - November 2014

A robust resurgence of Athens

The airport’s passenger traffic for the month of November exceeded for the first time in the last five years the 1 million mark, reaching 1.04 million passengers, achieving a significant growth, similar to the one observed in October, at the level of 27.4%. Domestic travellers presented an impressive growth of 38.7% and international passengers continued their consistent growth, exceeding the 20% mark (+21.4%). During November, Greek travellers continued to show a strong growth of 30%, with an outstanding increase in their domestic trips (+43%). Foreign visitors, travelling to Athens only, grew by an impressive 28%, reaffirming the attractiveness of Athens as a destination, even during the off-peak season. The significant traffic growth observed during October and November signifies the continuation of a strong air traffic development trend for the winter months as well.

Overall, during the first eleven months of the year, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 14.14 million, exceeding prior-year levels by 2.4 million passengers, corresponding to a significant increase of 20.8%, with both domestic and international traffic achieving similar levels of growth (+21.3% and +20.5% respectively). This successful outcome is attributed to a series of key factors: a. the stabilization of the economy, reflected in the increased air travelling of Greek residents, demonstrating an overall 13.5% rise - which was largely driven by the strong 23% growth observed between June and November, b. the strengthening of the city attractiveness, clearly shown in the foreign Athens’ visitors robust upward trend, with a remarkable growth of 31% and c. the significant increase in the capacity offered by the airlines.
