Facts (Overview)
Brussels is the Capital of Europe; it is both politically and economically at the Heart of the European Union.
In 2011 Brussels Airport welcomed almost 19 million passengers, signifying a growth of more than 10%. 88 airlines operate from the 3 non-congested runways, generating more than 220,000 movements per year. More than 750,000 tonnes of flown and trucked cargo pass through Brussels Airport, making it the 6th largest cargo airport in Europe, (excluding the 3 integrator hubs).
The Brussels Airport network is growing rapidly: in 2011, 12 new routes were added to our map, operated by existing and five new carriers, including Air Arabia, Belle Air, Qatar Airways and Thai Airways International. It is all about bringing the world closer to the Heart of Europe: new destinations include Bamako, Bangkok, Bordeaux, Doha, Liverpool, Nantes, Pristina, Santo Domingo and Tirana. Other routes are being reinforced by additional frequencies & capacity.
With almost 20 million people living within one and a half hour’s drive, the airport has a wide catchment area including Belgium, the south of the Netherlands and the north-eastern part of France. Five out of six passengers are O&D, highlighting the strength of the Brussels Airport catchment.
Passengers using Brussels Airport have a very broad profile, underpinned by high-yield business travel from political institutions such as the EU and NATO, and major multinationals based in and around the city and the wider catchment. The densely populated catchment, and in particular the large expatriate communities, also provide a significant leisure and VFR market.
As the gateway to the Capital of Europe, Brussels Airport is more than pleased to Welcome you to Europe.
