Cargolux launches cargo route at Avinor Oslo Airport

Oslo Airport is set to become the first main airport in Scandinavia that can boast regular traffic from a Boeing 747-8F as Cargolux launches their new cargo route to Luxembourg on 1st of November.

This aircraft replaces the traditional Jumbo Jet and is the world’s longest commercial aircraft with a cargo capacity of 130 metric tonnes. In addition to implementing the route, Cargolux also makes Avinor Oslo Airport its main cargo hub in Scandinavia.

“We are very happy to introduce Oslo to our network,” says Niek van der Weide, Cargolux EVP Sales & Marketing.

“The response from our customers has been phenomenal and we appreciate the way they welcome us in Norway. The firm support of our clients shows that our personal attention and dedication to the needs of our partners in the market is noted and appreciated.”

With Cargolux as a new carrier at Oslo Airport, Avinor will contribute to meet the market demand.

“The seafood industry requires more direct capacity to the most important markets in Asia and the US. We are continuously working to facilitate more direct capacity from Oslo Airport and through Cargolux, the seafood industry will have access to yet another desirable network to the most important overseas markets,” says Avinor Manager Cargo Development, Martin Langaas.

Oslo Airport as a cargo hub

Implementing this route is an important means of cementing Oslo Airport's role as a hub for exporting fresh Norwegian seafood. The route will contribute to the increase in the share of Norwegian seafood that is transported directly to Asia and North America from Norway by plane. It will also further strengthen the position of Oslo Airport and Norway as the largest air cargo market in the Nordics.

“Due to its seafood export, Norway makes up half of all air cargo transport in the Nordics, with salmon being the largest single cargo item in all of Europe,” Langaas concludes.

Cargolux will mainly be operating out of Oslo Airport on Tuesdays, connecting with the most important markets in Asia through their hub in Luxembourg. The aircraft will arrive from New York at 15:00 and depart for the Cargoolux base in Luxembourg at 17:00.
