RFD Receives 2016 Illinois Public Airport Association Construction Project Award

Award received at IPAA Conference Luncheon

The Illinois Public Airport Association (IPAA) has announced that the Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) has been chosen as the recipient of the 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award for the MRO/AAR Construction Project. This honor was formally presented to RFD at the annual Illinois Public Airport Association Conference Luncheon held on Monday, September 26, 2016 in Galena, IL.

“This award is certainly a team effort,” said Mike Dunn, Executive Director of RFD.  “The Board has given great direction and the staff and construction companies, which include Scandroli Construction, Jeff Flemming & Associates and Larson & Darby Group, have done a tremendous job of carrying out that vision.  The Board has created an atmosphere that has allowed staff to think creatively, and foster a fiscal responsibility that has given our taxpayers confidence in the airport.”

IPAA promotes the development, construction, maintenance and continued improvement of publicly-owned airports throughout the entire aviation system in the State of Illinois and the nation. This award is given to airports.

AAR Corp. and RFD opened the $40 million Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, the biggest of its kind in North America in August.  The new facility will allow for some of the world’s largest aircraft to be serviced efficiently and effectively in the heart of the Midwest. The project was completed on time and on budget, and will bring an initial 500 jobs to the region. The project’s 52,000 bolts; 1,000 tons of steel; 200,000 sq. feet of PVC; and twin hangar complex makes this one of the largest pre-engineered structures of its kind.

The MRO facility is expected to operate 24 hours a day and will service next-generation, wide-body aircraft. This will allow for scheduled and unscheduled service, modification and overhaul and all other support services for cargo, passenger and military aircraft.
