For the first time more than three million passengers in one month

The passenger volume recorded in Berlin in the period from January to July was 11.4 per cent higher in 2016 compared to the previous year. Since the beginning of the year, 18.3 million passengers have flown using Schönefeld and Tegel. In July 2016, the passenger volume at both airports together totalled more than three million for the first time. In the July 2016 traffic report, you will find the figures for passengers, flight movements and air freight for the individual month as well as in aggregate for the period since the beginning of the year – in both cases, the figures are compared to those for the respective period in the previous year.

Traffic figures for the period of January to July 2016

  • Passengers: In the January to July period, 18,312,916 passengers flew using Schönefeld and Tegel airports. This represents an increase of 11.4 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. 6,310,163 passengers flew using Schönefeld, which is 39.7 per cent more than in the comparison period in 2015. 12,002,753 passengers took off from and landed at Tegel, which is 0.7 per cent more than in the same period the previous year.
  • Flight movements: The number of flight movements at Schönefeld and Tegel together that were recorded in the period from January to July 2016 rose to a total of 161,284 take-offs and landings. This represents an increase of 9.1 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. At Schönefeld, the number of flight movements increased to 53,868. This corresponds to an increase of 28.4 per cent. At Tegel, there were 107,416 take-offs and landings – 1.4 per cent more than in the previous year. 
  • Air freight: Air freight recorded in the January to July period totalled 25,262 tonnes, which represents an increase of 2.7 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. During the first seven months, 4,944 tonnes of air freight were handled at Schönefeld (+5.8 per cent) and 20,319 tonnes at Tegel (+1.9 per cent).

Traffic figures for July 2016

  • Passengers: In July 2016, 3,073,596 passengers took off from and landed at Schönefeld and Tegel airports. This represents an increase of 13.8 per cent compared to July 2015. The number of passengers that have flown using Schönefeld and Tegel in a single month has therefore, for the first time, risen above three million. In July, 1,030,043 passengers flew using Schönefeld (+41.5 per cent) and 2,043,553 passengers flew using Tegel (+3.6 per cent). Thus, for the first time this year, more than two million passengers took off from and landed at Tegel in a single month.
  • Flight movements: The number of flight movements at Schönefeld and Tegel airports rose in July 2016 to 24,560 take-offs and landings, which represents an increase of 7.9 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. At Schönefeld, the number of flight movements increased to 8,106 (+30.6 per cent). At Tegel, there were 16,454 flight movements in July (-0.7 per cent).
  • Air freight: Air freight at Schönefeld and Tegel airports in July 2016 amounted to 4,010 tonnes, which represents an increase of 19.5 per cent compared to July 2015. Air freight at Schönefeld reached 760 tonnes, which is 7.3 per cent more than in July 2015. At Tegel, 3,250 tonnes of air freight were recorded (+22.7 per cent).
