easyJet celebrates its 20th birthday at Aberdeen

Airline marks two decades of low fares, friendly service and unrivalled network

easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, is today celebrating twenty years of flying from Aberdeen.  On 26 January 1996 easyJet’s first flight landed into Aberdeen from London Luton. Since then easyJet has carried over 3.1m passengers from Aberdeen and flown over 27,000 flights.

easyJet is Scotland’s largest airline and since the very first flight twenty years ago between Luton and Glasgow Scotland has been a key market for easyJet. easyJet flies between London and Scotland up to 62 times a day and now has an unrivalled network of over 50 routes served from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.

The airline, which celebrated its twenty birthday on 10 November 2015, operates 840 flights in and out of Scotland per week in peak summer and now flies over 5 million passengers to 44 airports in 18 countries from Scotland..

easyJet’s combination of affordable fares, commitment to customer service and innovative new technology such as mobile boarding means that over 5.3 million passengers choose to travel with the airline to and from Scotland every year.

easyJet remains committed to providing easy and affordable business connections between London and Scotland and to serving Scotland by offering customers low fares and a convenient schedule for both leisure and business travellers.

Lord Provost of Aberdeen George Adam said:

“Successful transport links are essential to maintain Aberdeen’s vibrant international outlook and to satisfy the huge demand from business travellers and tourists alike.  easyJet’s long term commitment to Aberdeen is something to be celebrated and I wish them all the very best for many more happy years of flying from Aberdeen.”

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s Head of Scotland said:

“We’re delighted to be celebrating easyJet’s operation over the past two decades from Aberdeen today.  20 years ago easyJet changed the way Europe travelled.  We challenged the high price monopolies of the legacy airlines and enabled a new generation of people of all ages, incomes and interests to enjoy Europe.  .

“We started with fares to Scotland from £29 – or as we advertised at the time, the same price as a pair of jeans.  A pair of Levis 501s will now set your back £75 while our fares to Aberdeen start from £23.49.

“I have to thank our fantastic customers who travel to and from Aberdeen for their loyalty and support.

“Although today we’re celebrating 20 years of easyJet in Aberdeen, we’re even more excited about the future.  We will continue to challenge conventional thinking and we look forward to where the next two decades could take us.”

Carol Benzie, managing director of Aberdeen International Airport said:

“easyJet has gone from strength-to-strength since it flew its first flight into Aberdeen 20 years ago. The Aberdeen to Luton route, as well as the airline’s Gatwick service, continues to be hugely important for our passengers – both for leisure and for business.  We look forward to working in partnership with easyJet and ensuring the airline’s continued growth at Aberdeen International Airport. ”
