Construction Boom in Skåne

Construction Boom in Skåne

The newspaper Sydsvenskan resports that during the year of 2010 the greater area of Malmö reached an all time high of started and active construction projects. The growth compared to 2009 is an amazing 150%, but it is of course important to be aware of the low level in 2009 when the recess held Skåne, and Sweden in particular, in a firm grip.

During 2010 the number of new housing alternatives on the market was 3 400. This year another 4 200 appartments and houses are expected to be completed and ready for rent or sale. The construction boom is predicted to continue also during 2012 and by then the number of housing projects per capita in Malmö will be larger than the corresponding in the greater areas of Gothenburg and Stockholm respectively.

Boverket claims  in the same article that this fairly large increase still is too small. The main reason for this is that construction projects are planned according to the economic/financial developments in the region rather than to the demographic shifts and varying immigration. Skåne was not as badly hit during the economic recess as the rest of the country but still the projects were decreasing. At the same time more people moved into the region since more jobs were available on this market than in the rest of Sweden and at the same time the population grew larger.
