Pittsburgh International Airport Traffic Report for October 2015

Passenger traffic rises 4.2 percent compared to October 2014 as mix of carriers continue to add seats in the market

Flights, seats and passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport continue to show monthly and year-over-year increases through October.

Combined enplaned and deplaned traffic for October 2015 totaled 743,325 passengers. October 2015 shows a 12 percent increase from the previous month and a 4.2 percent increase over October 2014, which had 713,672 total passengers. Year-to-date total airport passenger traffic is up 1.2 percent. The airport also recorded 12,348 aircraft operations (takeoffs and landings) in October 2015 compared to 11,623 in October 2014, a 6.2 percent increase.

The increases are in part the result of Allegiant Air, Sun Air Express, Porter, JetBlue, Southwest and OneJet commencing new service within the past 12 months. Sun Air Express, which celebrated its one-year anniversary at Pittsburgh International in November, added twice daily flights to Hagerstown, Md., in addition to Franklin, Bradford, Altoona, Lancaster and Jamestown, N.Y.

Route additions by JetBlue to Ft. Lauderdale, as well as the recent launch of twice daily service to Toronto City Airport on Porter Airlines have also helped to boost capacity.  Additionally, Air Canada began using 50-seat regional jets on some flights to Toronto, upgrading from 37-seat turboprops. The nonstop Paris flight on Delta operated through Oct. 23, and Vacation Express also served Grand Bahama Island with weekly flights through the month.

“The success of regional, domestic and international routes on a mix of carriers demonstrates our ongoing transition from a former mega-hub to a top origin-and-destination facility,” said CEO Christina Cassotis. “We are pleased to see carriers’ confidence in the Pittsburgh market and increasing community support for these new flights.”

Pittsburgh International Airport serves 52 airports nonstop with an average of 171 weekday departures and more than 14,000 available seats on 12 carriers.
