Southwest Adds Nonstop Service to New Orleans

The Big Easy Marks Southwest's Seventeenth Nonstop Destination Served from Pittsburgh International Airport

Southwest Airlines announced it will add nonstop service from Pittsburgh International Airport to New Orleans beginning in March, the latest addition in the airline’s steady growth in the region.

“Beginning this spring, Southwest Airlines is proud to bring even more of Pittsburgh to New Orleans with the new nonstop flight on Sundays,” said Dave Doty, Senior Manager, Business Development. “We hope our customers enjoy the incredible benefits that make Southwest different and customer friendly. We know our customers will enjoy these whether traveling for business or leisure.”

The new flight increases the number of nonstop destinations Southwest serves from Pittsburgh to 17, more than any other airline. The flight will operate on Sundays from March 19 through May 7.

“Southwest’s continued growth in Pittsburgh is providing more and more nonstop options for travelers,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said. “Southwest’s growth here is matching the fantastic momentum at our airport and region.”

The addition of New Orleans follows other recent Southwest daily, year-round nonstop additions from Pittsburgh including Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Dallas. Southwest joins Allegiant Air in offering service to the Big Easy, which started earlier this year.

“We’re excited to continue our partnership with Southwest as they add another nonstop destination from Pittsburgh International Airport,” Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said. “Travelers will have more nonstop options as they head south during a peak travel time. Airlines are recognizing Pittsburgh’s strong market as our nonstop destinations have surged 70 percent in the past two years.”

The Southwest announcement follows other recent momentum at the airport. Southern Airways launched nonstop service to Harrisburg on Monday, marking the first time Pittsburgh has been connected to the state capital by air since 2008. Allegiant will launch nonstop service to San Juan, Puerto Rico and Austin, Texas in December, and OneJet launched service to Cincinnati last month. JetBlue also is increasing its service to Boston early next year.
