Routes Americas Awards 2011
Routes Airport Marketing Awards - Regional Heats - The Americas
Airport Marketing Awards are the prominent award ceremony for which the results are voted by its primary customers, the airline networking community.
The winner of the first heat of this year's Routes Airport Marketing Awards was announced at a lavish Gala Dinner in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Over 300 aviation professionals were gathered, taking part in the 4th Routes Americas - the only network planning event for all the Americas.
The Routes Airport Marketing Awards have become synonymous with recognising and rewarding the highest standards of marketing activities undertaken by airports. They work on the core principal that the people who are best placed to judge an airport’s marketing activities are its primary users: airlines.
This year, the heat had two categories: South, Central and the Caribbean, and the North. In the first category, Queen Beatrix International Airport and Tocumen International Airport were highly recommended while Princess Juliana International Airport was declared the winner.
In the second category, Edmonton International Airport and McCarran International Airport were highly commended, while Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport was crowned the winner not only of that category but also overall.
Dave Stroud, Senior Vice President of Routes said, “The standard of marketing activities undertaken by airports never fails to impress me. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport are worthy winners and I am hopeful for them that their efforts will encourage many new routes and developments for them”.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What’s the difference between the regional Routes Awards and the World Awards?
- The airlines who vote – every airline in the world is asked to vote and votes are received from
them no matter what their location (only airlines within the particular region can vote for the
regional awards).
- The time period involved on each individual event e.g. World Routes Sept 10 – Oct 11.
- What the airlines consider i.e. they looking from a global or regional perspective.
- The overall winners from each region (Americas, Asia, Europe, Africa) are automatically shortlisted
for the World Routes Airport Marketing Awards.
2. Who is eligible to vote?
Every airline can vote. Network planners and others on the Routes database are asked to vote but votes will be accepted from others involved in commercial and marketing support on a local level.
3. What period of time does the vote cover?
Airlines should consider the year since the last Routes Americas in Lima, Peru. So the specific period of time will be February 2010 – February 2011.
4. What do the airlines consider when voting?
Airlines considered airports whose marketing efforts, during the period of time stipulated above, have made a real impact on their future network development plans. They will be considering the efficient and useful marketing activities of any airport on their network, irrespective of airport size.
Airlines also consider the airport's market research activities, the airport's marketing communications activities, the airport's business case presentations for new market opportunities and the airport's joint communication campaigns with third parties. Finally, they also considered innovative use of technologies or techniques to support their airline by any airport.
5. How many airports does the airline vote for?
Airlines can nominate up to 5 airports in priority order. The first airport was, therefore, the one they considered to have had the greatest overall impact on their network development plans.
6. How long is the voting period?
The voting period is from 17th December 2010 to 24th January 2011.
7. What should I submit?
Shortlisted airports should use the submission form provided to give the judges as much information as they can about their marketing activities and support packages to airlines. They should provide details about their market research activities, communications and marketing campaigns and their effectiveness, route successes and any innovative techniques they have used in their activities.
8. Who are the judges?
The judging panel is drawn from past and present airline decision makers from around the world and members of the senior management of RDG – The Route Development Group.
9. When will the winners be announced?
The winners of each category and the overall winner will be announced on Monday 14th February 2011 at the Gala Dinner.
10. Is there an overall winner like in the regional awards and what does that mean?
Yes, there will be an overall winner in the Regional events, as they are split on a sub regional basis.
The overall winner from each region will then be automatically shortlisted for the World Awards. What this means is that this airport does not need votes from outside its region to be shortlisted for the World Awards giving all airports, no matter their size or region to have a chance of winning a globally recognised industry award.
