Routes Tourism Mediterranean Set to Make Real Impact on the Region

Posted 28/01/2011 - Viewed 2565 time(s)

Antalya, Turkey, 21st February, 2011

Routes Tourism Mediterranean, to take place in Antalya, Turkey, from 13th – 15th February 2011, will be the first ever Routes Tourism event. It will follow the renowned, tried and tested Routes formula of one-to-one meetings mixed with other formal and informal networking opportunities.

The principal objective of Routes Tourism Mediterranean is to increase tourist traffic within the entire Mediterranean region. Its destinations currently attract more visitors each year than those of all of the countries in the Americas, Africa and the Middle East combined. Recently, however, many of the more mature Mediterranean resorts have taken significant drops in tourism arrivals, whilst the younger, still developing, destinations such as Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt have seen significant growth of over 20%. This makes route development more necessary than ever, and Routes Tourism Mediterranean is the ideal platform for facilitating this.

Eric Layden, Advisor to SVP, Routes, commented that “Unlike most tourism events, our event will neither be an exhibition nor a conference. Routes Tourism Mediterranean will focus on a series of pre-arranged meetings between tour operators, airlines and their suppliers in each destination, where they will discuss new products, commercial terms and promotional strategies that will enable them to reach specific agreements regarding tour operators’ summer 2012 programmes”.

With various governmental representatives already registered to attend, including Mr Ozgur Ozaslan, Turkey’s Deputy Undersecretary, Ministry for Tourism and Culture, Mr Amr El Ezaby, Vice Minister & Chairman, Egyptian Tourist Authority, and Greece’s Deputy Minister for Tourism, Mr George Nikitiades, it is clear how seriously the event is being taken within the region.

Previous hosts of Routes events have seen significant strengthening and development of their airport, city and region in the months and years immediately following the event. They are able to promote themselves to the industry and to highlight their strengths as a future destination for both leisure and business tourism.
