Wizz Air to fill SkyEurope void in Prague
Posted 02/09/2009
Wizz Air yesterday announced the addition of a third aircraft in Prague in June 2010 in response to SkyEurope Airlines' shutdown (ATWOnline, Sept. 1). It also will increase frequencies on existing services to London Luton, Rome Fiumicino, Bergamo, Brussels Charleroi and Eindhoven in September and October.
Meanwhile, Niki CEO Otmar Lenz confirmed to ATWOnline that the carrier will look to expand into areas that lost service as a result of SkyEurope's demise. It will launch daily flights from Vienna to Sophia, Brussels and Bucharest (airport undecided) for the winter schedule. "Of course we will look at SkyEurope's whole network [from Vienna], but opening additional routes depends on how fast we can add additional aircraft," Lenz said. The LCC also will increase flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt using slots relinquished by Lufthansa following its merger with Austrian Airlines. Niki's fleet is scheduled to increase to 16 aircraft from 12 next year.
