ROUTES AFRICA: Comair to Drop Tanzania Link

Posted 02/07/2011

South African carrier and British Airways franchise partner Comair has confirmed that it will temporarily suspend flights between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam from the end of July, but could resume the route during the Northern Winter schedule; subject to a network review.

The airline launched the route in November 2010 to support its strategic growth into other African markets and to provide enhanced access to and from South Africa for both business travellers and tourists travelling from Dar es Salaam.  It initially offered a five times weekly link but last month reduced frequencies to three rotations per week.  According to an official statement from the carrier all services will be “temporarily suspended” from August 2, pending “a review” of its new seasonal schedule.

“Generally, the uptake on this particular route has been satisfactory,” said Stuart Cochrane, Executive Manager for Network Development and Alliances, Comair.  “However, as part of an annual scheduling revision process, Comair is currently investigating all existing routes in a bid to identify areas of improvement.”

“Where required, Comair is introducing measures to ensure enhanced operational efficiency by either increasing or reducing the number of flights, or deploying smaller aircraft to optimally service that particular market,” he added.
