STATISTICS SPOTLIGHT: Top 50 Airports - August 2013

Every month The HUB is providing statistics highlighting global airline and airport activity. Alongside detailing the top 50 airlines and airports each month by available seat capacity we look at how these figures compare with the same month the previous year and in 2010, showing which airlines and airports are growing and which are constraining. The data is extracted from SRS Analyser and is based on uploaded schedules as at August 1, 2013.

There have been two changes in the top ten since last month’s analysis due to the growth of the Indonesian market and the continued rise of Dubai International Airport as one of the world’s biggest hubs. Dubai has moved steadily up the ranking over the past decade and this month moves in to the top five ahead of Los Angeles International. Meanwhile, Jakarta Soekarno–Hatta International has jumped four places and entered the top ten global airports by capacity this month after moving from 12th to eighth in the ranking.

Outside of the top ten largest airports the biggest climbers compared with our July 2013 analysis were London Gatwick, which rose from 36th to 31st; Newark Liberty International, which rose from 41st to 38th and Shenzhen International which, entered the top 50 this month. The main fallers were Houston George Bush Intercontinental, which fell from 31st to 36th; Phoenix Sky Harbor International, which slipped from 32nd to 37th and Sao Guarulhos, which fell from 38th to 41st in the ranking.
