Walking tours of Barcelona have been organised for World Routes delegates who are keen to explore the city’s amazing architecture and medieval past.

Modernisme Walking Tour

(Saturday 23 September)

The modernist artistic movement at the turn of the 20th century developed a unique style in Catalonia which is best known for its architectural expression.

A guided walking tour will offer expert commentary on buildings designed by Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and other giants of Catalan modernism.

You will be taken to the ‘Quadrat d'Or’ heritage district which contains a plethora of modernist masterpieces such as the Casa Batlló, the Pedrera, the Casa Amatller and the Casa Lleó Morera.

The tour also involves a trip to the Museu del Modernisme de Barcelona which contains a collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture and decorative arts from the Catalan region.

Gothic Walking Tour

(Wednesday 27 September)

Famed for its narrow cobbled streets, squares and unique buildings, the Gothic Quarter was at the heart of Roman and medieval Barcelona. This fascinating tour of the city’s past will begin at the Plaça Sant Jaume - the political centre of Barcelona and Catalonia - then move to Barcelona Cathedral and the remains of the city’s Roman walls.

The final stop will be the 14th century Plaça del Rei square which was the focus of power during the reign of Catalan monarchs. The Palau Reial Major palace and the Watchtower of King Martí both flank the square.

Both tours have a choice of slots at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Places are limited so book early to avoid disppointment.
