Vienna Airport hopes for long-haul growth

Vienna Airport outlines aim for more long-haul flights as part of World Routes 2017 delegation.

Q: What have been your most notable route successes?

Vienna Airport has secured some new routes on the long haul: in summer 2017, Austrian Airlines has commenced its first flights to the US West Coast – to Los Angeles - and will open a new route to the Seychelles in winter 17/18.

Thai Airways will launch its route Vienna-Bangkok in November 2017. This year numerous new airlines where welcomed at Vienna: Flybe with a service to London-Southend, Volotea with flights to Nantes, Marseille and Genoa and UTAir and S7 Airlines connecting Vienna and Moscow.

SkyWork Airlines added with flights between Vienna and Basel a new route to their network and the Eurowings base is developing very pleasing with many new destinations to the Mediterranean and to Germany.

Q: What are you next targets for route development?

We aim to further develop our long haul network and support transfer traffic to strengthen our position as a hub between west and east. Also important to Vienna Airport is the local market - that shows very strong growth – and focus on the expansion of point-to point connections especially within Europe.

Q: What is your main message at World Routes?

Vienna offers a strong market with high potential for new routes. Thanks to our location in the East of Austria we serve four countries: Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Republic and of course Austria. The market is balanced between leisure, business and convention traffic – as Vienna is a top location for international conferences.
