Near miss on JFK runway

Posted 23/06/2011

News emerged yesterday of a terrifying near miss at New York’s JFK airport on Monday night when a Lufthansa plane narrowly missed colliding with an Egyptair jet.

The New York Post reports the Lufthansa flight leaving the US and heading for Munich carrying 286 passengers was speeding up for takeoff on a runway when the Egyptair plane turned right into its path.

Immediately air traffic controllers shouted at the Lufthansa pilots to stop the plane and the jet screeched to a halt just in time to avoid a collision.

The paper reports how ATC staff were heard on tape, shouting "Cancel takeoff. Cancel takeoff plans" while a pilot witnessing the incident is shouting “Those two were coming together".

Both planes then took off on their scheduled flights within two hours after the Lufthansa jet’s brakes were inspected for damage. An investigation by the FAA into the incident is now underway.
