Chilean volcanic ash cloud disrupts flights again

Posted 30/06/2011

Australian and New Zealand flight networks are suffering fresh disruption today from the ash cloud emitted by the Chilean volcano Puyehue Cordon Caulle.

Qantas and Jetstar yesterday had to suspend flights to and from Queensland, Christchurch and Wellington and flights between Sydney and Buenos Aires are delayed.

A spokesperson for Qantas said: “Volcanic ash from the eruption of the Puyehue Cordon Caulle volcano in Chile continues to cause flight disruptions to the Qantas network. At Qantas safety is our first priority and a number of flights have been canceled or rerouted to avoid the volcanic ash cloud."

The Puyehue Cordon Caulle erupted on June 4 and has since caused widespread aviation disruption.
