Flight delayed? Blame the rain

Which causes the most airline delays: 1. snowstorms; or 2. torrential rain downpours.
The perhaps surprising answer is No. 2.
The reasons are that winter storms can be monitored up to a week in advance, allowing passengers to cancel or rebook. Airlines can also reduce the number of flights.
“Summer thunderstorms, on the other hand, pop up quickly, causing more frequent delays that can last hours,” says the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel, quoting aviation experts.
Bad weather is responsible for about 60 percent of all flight delays, according to the US Transportation Department. In the past five years, about 20 percent of US flights were delayed for either weather, air traffic control, flight crew or maintenance problems.
