Star Alliance puts Air India membership on hold

Posted 03/08/2011

The Star Alliance has stalled the integration of Air India after it failed to meet the membership criteria.

The airline alliance first announced plans to welcome the carrier as a new member in 2007 but Air India failed to meet a July 31 deadline to meet minimum standards of its joining contract.

In a statement Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht said: “With the collective decision to put the integration efforts on hold today we aim to contribute to Air India’s flexibility to concentrate on its ongoing strategic reorientation.

“In this process our member carriers will continue to provide assistance to Air India wherever required.”
