Snow storm disrupts travel in New Zealand

Posted 16/08/2011

New Zealand has been hit by the worst winter storm in decades.

The Antarctic blast, described by the New Zealand MetService as close to a one in 50 year event, has seen roads, schools and airports closed.

The storm brought snow in places that don't usually see it, including Wellington and Auckland where snow hasn't fallen in more than 30 years.

Air and road travel has been disrupted with many roads in both north and south islands closed and some flights out of Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin were cancelled earlier this week.
