'Underpants bomber' goes on trial

A passenger who tried to detonate a bomb in his underpants on a flight to the United States will stand trial in Detroit today.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab faces life in prison if he his convicted of attempting to murder 289 people onboard the Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day 2009.
The plot failed when the bomb, which was stitched into his underpants, failed to explode and set his clothing on fire.
Abdulmutallab, the son of one of the richest men in Nigeria, had to be treated in hospital for his injuries.
