Weighty issues for airlines

Posted 27/10/2011

AirTran Airways is changing its policies when it comes to weight. Under the new policy, passengers who cannot fit into a seat without putting down the arm rest will be required to buy a second ticket.

If there are empty seats on the plane, passengers can request a refund after the flight is over.

A spokeswoman for AirTran Airways says employees at the ticket counter will offer obese passengers a second seat or an upgrade for a fee.

AirTran is in the process of merging with Southwest Airlines, which already has a similar policy in place.
The new policy will start in March.
