Work Started on New Airport in Laos

Posted 19/03/2010

Laotian officials have announced that land clearance has started for Luang Prabang's airport expansion project, which will be financed by a special Chinese loan worth USD 86.4 million. An agreement on the loan was one of eight co-operation documents signed between the two governments during a working visit by Lao leaders to China led by President Choummaly Sayasone in 2009. Luang Prabang's Deputy Governor Khampheng Saysompheng said that 500 families would be relocated from the construction site adjacent to the existing airport in the country's ancient capital, which is a major tourism attraction. The project includes a 3000-m runway able to accommodate larger aircraft, with the exception of the Airbus A380. Saysompheng said that aircraft carrying up to 400 passengers will be able to land at the new airport. The expansion is scheduled to open in 2013. -- Luang Prabang has direct flights to several major cities in the region, including as Hanoi, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Cambodia's Siem Reap.
