Airport beacons a first in the city

Southampton Airport has this week installed two solar powered Belisha Beacons on a zebra crossing between the train station and the airport, in what is believed to be a first in the city.

Justin Wright, Projects Manager, commented, “The beacons are part of a wider plan to utilise solar power and other low energy lighting options in the airport.  With no dedicated lighting on the crossing previously, the lights are going to make a big difference to the passengers, staff and local office workers who regularly use it, as well as positively contributing to the airports environmental credentials.”

In 2010 the airport was the first in the UK to use solar power technology in lights surrounding the airfield, and this summer new low energy LED lights are going to replace existing lighting on the aircraft stands.
