Southampton Airport holds event to celebrate powdair launch

On Friday 20th October, Southampton Airport spent the day celebrating the launch of one of its newest airlines, powdair, which will be commencing flights to Sion, Switzerland starting 15th December.

The launch event was held at the brand new, luxury, Southampton Harbour Hotel and was open to members of the public and enabled them to come down to the hotel and ask any questions they may have about the new airline and route. There was also the chance to play on some virtual reality gear, grab a goodie bag and enter a competition to win some prizes including a VIP two night stay at the 5* Guarda Golf Hotel and Residences in Crans Montana, powdair flights and transfers and £300 worth of ski equipment.

powdair is a brand new airline operating into the heart of Switzerland’s most popular winter sports region, the Valais. With a direct routes from Southampton into the regions capital, Sion, transfers to the ski resorts of Verbier, Zermatt, Crans-Montana, Zinal-Grimentz, Leukerbad and Anzère will be significantly cut compared to other airports in the country. Average fare prices will be around £140. Flight times are typically between 1 hour 25 minutes and 2 hours from the UK airports.

Dave Lees, Managing Director at Southampton Airport, said ‘We’ve had a wonderful day celebrating the launch of powdair with this new service to Sion in Switzerland. This new route will give the south coast the chance to reach top ski resorts in less time than ever before and it was great to chat to local residents and passengers today about powdair and what it can offer them. We look forward to welcoming powdair to the airport in December’.

Zoë Ombler, Head of Commercial for powdair, said: “We were overwhelmed with the support from visitors to our launch event today – Southampton is a hugely popular airport and we are delighted to be able offer four flights per week to Sion from this December. We’re also hoping that demand will be high enough for us to continue the route all year round – perfect for mountain and road cyclists – or anyone wishing to visit the Valais or Portes du Soleil this summer!”
