Kunming is the capital of the Yunnan Province and is known as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’ for its climate and blooming flowers year-round.

With a history of more than 2,400 years, it was the gateway to Silk Road that facilitated trade with Tibet, Sichuan, Myanmar and India. The most popular tourist destination in southwest China, Kunming carriers out the 72-hour Visa-Free Policy which allows passport holders of 51 countries and regions to enjoy a 72-hour visa free stay when making an international transfer via Changshui Airport.

5 things you (probably) don’t know about Kunming

  1. One of the main delicacies in the region is called ‘Crossing-the-bridge-noodles’- The legend behind them involves a student studying for his imperial exam. He went to study on an island a short way from his wife and village. Every day his wife would bring him food, but because of the distance (she had to cross a bridge) the food would get cold. The student's wife figured out that by layering the broth with oil, she could keep the food hot.
  2. Yunnan Province is the size of the state of California
  3. In the 1980s and 1990s, the city center was rebuilt, with Swiss help, in its current 'modern' style to impress visitors attending the1999 World Horticultural Exposition
  4. The Qiongzhu Si (Bamboo Temple) just outside of the city centre was originally built in 639AD, and was reconstructed in 1422.
  5. Every year, many Chinese and international athletes come to Kunming for high-altitude training. The city has been China's national high-elevation training base for more than 30 years.
