The next stage of the AOC process, which is well underway for the airline will see the authorities evaluating fastjet Zambia’s planned company structure, gaining understanding of the airline’s Airbus aircraft and its operational plan.

fastjet initially planned to launch by the end of 2014, offering both domestic and international services, however, CEO Ed Winter said restructuring at the Zambian Department of Civil Aviation has delayed the process of securing an Air Operator Certificate for the new carrier.

However, the process is now underway and Ed Winter, who is also the interim Chairman, has said: “We have an excellent team in Zambia, who are working positively with the local authorities to complete the approval process as efficiently as possible.”

Zambia will be fastjet’s second base from which it plans to operate low-cost flights to various destinations in East and Southern Africa. Ticket prices on regional routes from Zambia tend to be very high, and the airline hopes to stimulate the market with its low-cost model.

Fastjet Zambia commercial manager Patricia Zimba said: “The low-cost model is something that is new on the Zambian aviation market and what is exciting is that we are providing low-cost fares. The presence of us in the market is going to boost trade between any of the countries because of the low fares and type of equipment we are offering.”
