AIRLINES, AIRPORTS, AIRCRAFT: International Capacity from Colombia

This year we have expanded the depth of detail in our popular country by country air capacity statistics series. Every week Routesonline provides statistics highlighting airline and airport activity in an individual domestic market. We take a look at the last five year’s schedules as a snapshot and compare seat capacity, showing which airlines and airports are growing and which are constraining and identifying trends.

The data is all supplied by OAG Aviation using its OAG Schedules Analyser tool.


Scheduled Network Capacity from Colombia

Our analysis of published schedules for the past five years shows that international air capacity from Colombia has risen from 4,790,167 available seats in 2010 to 6,835,615 available seats in 2014. This represents an average annual growth of 10.7 per cent across the period. In the past year capacity increased 8.0 per cent.

Avianca has strengthened its position as the dominant airline in Colombia’s international market over the course of the last year after its merger with TACA enhanced its offering in and out of its home market. The national carrier reported a 26.6 per cent increase in international departure capacity from the country in 2014 versus 2013, boosting its share of the market from 36.4 per cent to 42.8 per cent.

Central American carrier Copa Airlines is the second largest international operator from Colombia with a 19.0 per cent share, capacity up 7.2 per cent on 2013, while LAN Airlines is the third largest operator with a 6.8 per cent share, capacity up 29.3 per cent on 2013, the fastest growing airline in this market in 2014.

American Airlines is the largest carrier from North America in Colombia’s international market with a 5.1 per cent share; capacity up 16.1 per cent versus 2013. Low-fare carrier JetBlue Airways follows behind with a 3.3 per cent share having boosted its capacity between 2013 and 2014 by 26.4 per cent.

Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport dominates international air services from Colombia with a 75.2 per cent share of total available capacity within the country in 2014. It is followed by Medellin’s José María Córdova International Airport (10.4 per cent share), Cali’s Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport (6.3 per cent share) and Cartagena’s Rafael Núñez International Airport (3.4 per cent).

Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport, the main airport in the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, witnessed the largest rise in international capacity among Colombia’s international airports in 2014 with available seats increasing 156.5 per cent versus 2013. The second fastest growing international airport in Colombia in 2014 was Matecaña International Airport in the city of Pereira in the Risaralda department of Colombia where capacity grew 31.8 per cent versus 2013.

The chart below shows which aircraft types were most prevalent in Colombia's international market. The schedule data shows the Airbus A320 (320) is the most widely used aircraft type in the country with a 23.4 per cent share of available seats with its overall network capacity between 2013 and 2014 increasing by 15.6 per cent from 1.38 million seats to 1.60 million seats.

The second most utilised aircraft type in Colombia’s international market is the Airbus A319 (319) with a 17.7 per cent share, while third most widely operated by network capacity is the Airbus A330-300 (330) with a 14.1 per cent share.

The biggest rises in annual capacity among the top ten aircraft types were recorded by the Boeing 767-300 (763) with a 26.5 per cent rise in available international seats in 2014 versus 2013 and the Embraer 190 (E90) with an 18.6 per cent rise. The largest decline in annual capacity was recorded by the Airbus A340-600 (346) with a fall of 40.3 per cent versus 2013.
