Insight

Frontier is bringing the first new mainline service between San Antonio, Texas and Ontario, California, and the most recent service was in 2008. This twice weekly route complements the existing route flown between San Antonio and Los Angeles (LAX), which is 47 miles from Ontario, CA. The existing San Antonio to LAX route is operated by three carriers: American, Delta and Southwest, which has the largest seat share (50 percent). The competition and access to gates is the reason for serving Ontario, given that the carrier already has a presence at LAX. Frontier currently serves five other destinations from San Antonio including Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta and has also announced a twice weekly service between San Antonio and Washington (IAD). This is in addition to United’s highly successful twice daily regional jet service between the two cities. (Thanks to Martin Kammerman from the ASM US team for his insight!)

Insight

Nanjing to Kalibo is the first scheduled service to be operated by Juneyao Airlines to the Philippines and adds to the increasing number of international destinations served by the Shanghai-based carrier. The airline in August 2017 has international scheduled services to Thailand, Japan and Taiwan. Nanjing is the third largest airport base, in terms of seat capacity, for Juneyao Airlines after Shanghai Pudong and Shanghai Hongqiao and a city with a population of more than eight million. The route will serve the outbound leisure market from Nanjing, with Kalibo only two hours from idyllic beach destination of Boracay. Since 2016, the Philippines government and the new president has been targeting the Chinese outbound market. Previously, due to the South China Sea dispute, there was an unofficial travel ban to Philippines from China, with recent visits from the president of the Philippines, and closer ties, this has changed and has opened up the travel market from China. In addition to the Nanjing to Kalibo route, Juneyao is also adding Shanghai-Cebu and Shanghai-Kalibo for the Philippines market.
