Air Canada is expanding its footprint in South America from its Toronto hub with a three times weekly seasonal flight to the Ecuadorian capital Quito. The service, operated by Air Canada Rouge, will be the first non-stop service to Ecuador from Canada when it begins on 8 December 2019. It will operate until 11 May 2020 with a 282-seat Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.

The route offers Air Canada the opportunity to efficiently deploy its aircraft during the winter months when southern destinations are more popular. Quito, the host of Routes Americas in 2018, is a tourist destination in its own right, but it will enable Canadians to travel onwards to places like the world-famous Galapagos Islands. Meanwhile, the Ecuadorian community in Toronto is said to be “significant”. Cargo will also be a factor on this route.

"This new non-stop flight will act as a catalyst to strengthen existing ties between Ecuador and Canada by facilitating mobility for tourists and students; encouraging commercial exchange and opening new doors to further expand the breadth of our relations," said Sylvie Bédard, designated ambassador of Canada to Ecuador.

Egypt’s national airline EgyptAir will begin round-trip flights from Cairo to Washington Dulles International Airport three times per week from 3 June 2019. The route will be operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which the airline is scheduled to take delivery of in mid-April. EgyptAir is leasing six 787-9s from AeroCap. Washington will be the Star Alliance carrier’s third destination in North America after New York and Toronto. Cairo, meanwhile, will be Washington Dulles’ fifth city served in Africa. South African Airways operates flights to Accra and Dakar, Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa and Royal Air Maroc to Casablanca. The new route annoucement comes after the airport saw passenger activity increase by more than 5 percent in 2018. With its new non-stop service to Cairo, EgyptAir joins 32 other airlines offering 62 daily flights to 57 nonistop international destinations from Washington Dulles.
