ULCC Spirit to expand Colombian network

US ultra-LCC Spirit Airlines will fly from Fort Lauderdale, Florida (FLL) to two more destinations in Colombia starting in April, expanding its Colombian network to seven cities.

The new destinations are Bucaramanga (BGA) and Barranquilla (BAQ). Spirit already flies to Cartagena (CTG), Bogota (BOG), Medellin (MDE), Armenia (AXM) and Cali (CLO) from FLL and Orlando, Florida.

“The new destinations broaden Spirit’s reach into Colombia’s business and leisure markets,” Spirit said in a statement. “Barranquilla is the economic epicenter of the north coast. Bucaramanga is the hub for the entire Santander state and eastern Colombia region, which is a diverse origin and tourism market. Spirit’s service will be the first ever to connect this region to the US nonstop.”

The new routes, which are subject to government approval, will each be operated 3X-weekly. The airline did not specify which aircraft will operate the routes; it operates an all Airbus A320-family fleet.
