Following 30 months of consecutive monthly passenger growth, Birmingham Airport smashed through the 13 million passenger mark yesterday (23 September 2017) for the first time ever in a rolling 12 months, the airport has revealed at World Routes 2017.

As well as new airlines launching from the airport including British Airways and Jet2, existing carriers have recently added new routes and added extra capacity through the Midlands airport. This, together with the success of the Midlands region and Birmingham – the UK’s second city – have helped the airport achieve these impressive passenger records.

David Winstanley, Birmingham Airport’s chief operating officer, said: “It has been an immensely busy year and we have smashed all records, with 18 percent year-on-year passenger growth.

“This growth has surpassed our expectations and, although we are proud to be able to offer more services for our passengers, we acknowledge that we’ve had some growing pains over the summer.

“We’re now focused on the best in class service delivery for our airlines and customers next summer, when we will welcome new transatlantic flights with Primera Air to Boston and New York as well as new routes with our existing carriers.”

More than £450m will have been invested in Birmingham's facilities by the end of 2017, with recent developments including self-service bag drop desk, a new baggage handling system and redesigned car parking.
