Natal Airport rises from 13th to 3rd place in ANAC's national sustainability ranking.
Natal Airport achieved a significant result in the 2024 edition of the Sustainable Airport Program, promoted by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).
The airport in Rio Grande do Norte advanced from 13th place in 2023 to 3rd place nationally in the category this year, reaching an average of 84.98 points — a growth of over 40 percentage points in its environmental performance.
The jump in the ranking highlights Zurich Airport Brazil's commitment to sustainability and reflects the integrated work of the airport's operational, environmental, and administrative teams in adopting best practices and complying with the rigorous criteria established by ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency). In addition to its prominent position on the national stage, Natal Airport also led the C-III category, airports that handle up to 5 million passengers per year, in the Northeast region, surpassing other terminals with similar traffic.
Among the initiatives that contributed to this result, the efficient management of solid waste stands out — with more than 90% of materials being diverted from landfills and disposed of in an environmentally appropriate manner — as well as the solutions implemented to increase the terminal's energy efficiency. These include replacing conventional lighting with LED technology throughout the terminal and access roads, in addition to using a system that provides renewable energy for aircraft on the ground. Since the start of operation of this equipment in March 2025, the airport has already avoided the emission of 191.4 tons of CO₂, equivalent to 1472 Atlantic Forest trees sequestering CO₂ from the atmosphere.
The other airports managed by Zurich Airport Brazil also rank among the top performers in the 2024 edition. Check out their performance:
- Florianópolis (SBFL) – 1st place overall, with 91.57 points (Southern Region)
- Vitória (SBVT) – 2nd place overall, with 86.98 points (Southeast Region)
- Natal (SBSG) – 3rd place overall, with 84.98 points (Northeast Region)
Furthermore, Macaé Airport (RJ), also operated by Zurich Airport Brasil, was awarded 1st place in the category of terminals with up to 200,000 passengers, reinforcing the group's consistent performance in airports of different sizes and regions of the country.
The Sustainable Airports Program is an initiative of ANAC (Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency) that annually evaluates Brazilian airports based on environmental indicators, such as waste management, rational use of resources, energy efficiency, air quality, and commitments to reducing environmental impacts.
