About The Airline

Almost 20 Years of History

The plan to launch Wizz Air was conceived in June 2003 when six people with a wide range of airline expertise and successful track records teamed up with József Váradi, the Company’s Chief Executive Officer. In just three months, Wizz Air was a registered company ready to fly. The first flight took off on the 19th of May 2004 from Katowice to London Luton.

Today, Wizz Air is a group of four airlines: Wizz Air Hungary (founded in 2003), Wizz Air UK (founded in 2017), Wizz Air Abu Dhabi (founded in 2020) and Wizz Air Malta (founded in 2022).

Wizz Air has 33 bases in 16 countries and operates over 800 routes to nearly 200 destinations in Europe and beyond. In 2022, Wizz Air entered the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with its major expansion, launching over 20 new routes to the Kingdom from Europe and the UAE.

A team of more than 8,000 aviation professionals offers superior service and very low fares, making Wizz Air the preferred choice of 60.3 million passengers in 2023.

Wizz Air was recently named one of the world's ten safest airlines by airlineratings.com, the world's only safety and product rating agency, and named Airline of the Year by Air Transport Awards in 2019 and 2023. Wizz Air was also recognised as the 'Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline' in the World Finance Sustainability Awards in 2021-2023, as 'Airline Group of the Year for Global Environmental Sustainability' by CAPA-Centre for Aviation Awards for Excellence in 2022-2023 and 'Europe’s Leading Low-Cost Airline 2023' by World Travel Awards.

Since 2015, Wizz Air is listed on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol WIZZ.

Ultra-Low-Cost Offer

Wizz Air makes flying affordable for more people by offering the lowest fares. Today, we are seeing gradual recovery in market seat capacity to pre-pandemic levels. Wizz Air's broader and more diversified network offers more choice to allocate capacity in a way that drives profitable growth.

The airline continues to be the market leader in its core Central Eastern European market, while continuing to make investments in the Middle East, where a propensity to fly, calculated as a number of seats per head of population, is lower than in Central and Eastern Europe and significantly lower than Western Europe.

The latest technology is deployed to ensure that Wizz Air's experience is outstanding both in terms of service and value for money. The airline efficiently operates the newest fleet of the highest density single-aisle aircarft with 239 seats, which also enables it delivering the lowest carbon emissions intensity in the industry.

Wizz Air utilises its aircraft more than twelve hours per day, operating a point-to-point network and leveraging airports with low departure fees. The tickets are sold through Wizz Air's own digital channels, wizzair.com and the WIZZ app.

The Airbus A321neo is the most fuel-efficient and sustainable single-aisle aicraft on the market today, delivering significant environmental benefits in terms of carbon (-20%), NOx (-50%) and noise (-50%) emissions reduction compared to the previous generation aircraft Aibus A320ceo.

Sustainable by Design

Wizz Air is the winner of the CAPA - Centre for Aviation 'Global Environemental Sustainability Award' for two consequtive years in 2022 and 2023. Wizz Air is commited to continuous fleet renewal and focus on technology and innovation available here and now. The latest Airbus A321neo aircraft is significantly more fuel-efficient than previous generation aircraft.

One of the cornerstones of Wizz Air’s sustainability strategy is the integration of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Wizz Air has four agreements in place with the world leading SAF producers. The airline also made its first equity investment of £5 million into Firefly, a UK-based biofuel company, and participated in $50 million investment in CleanJoule, a US-based start-up.

By investing in the latest technologies, embracing SAF, and working collaboratively with partners, regulators, and stakeholders, Wizz Air is leading the charge towards a more sustainable air travel.
