SKY express expands its service from Düsseldorf
New route to Thessaloniki and daily flights to Athens
Greece is getting even closer to North Rhine-Westphalia: In addition to the Greek capital, the airline SKY express now also connects Düsseldorf Airport with Thessaloniki, the country’s second-largest city. The airline offers three weekly flights, departing Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 5:45 p.m. An Airbus A320neo is used for these flights. Düsseldorf is currently the only airport outside Greece from which SKY express offers flights to Thessaloniki.
This expands the airline’s service, which has been operating regular flights between Düsseldorf and Athens for two years. While the route was scheduled five times a week during the summer season, the Greek capital is now served daily in the current winter schedule. The flights are operated with aircraft from the Airbus A320 family, including brand-new A320neo and A321neo models. With an average fleet age of 3.9 years, SKY express operates the youngest fleet in Greece and one of the youngest in Europe.
“We are pleased that SKY express is further expanding its operations in Düsseldorf,” said Dr. Henning Pfisterer, Head of Aviation at Düsseldorf Airport. “With Thessaloniki, the airline is adding another important destination to its portfolio. The city isn’t just attractive to vacationers. It holds special significance for many people in North Rhine-Westphalia who have family roots there or close ties to Northern Greece. They now have more travel options, and the close cultural and family ties between our region and Greece are being strengthened.”
Gerasimos Skaltsas, Chief Commercial Officer of SKY express, emphasizes: “With its central location and large catchment area, Düsseldorf is a key hub for air traffic between Greece and Germany. For two years now, we have enjoyed a successful partnership with the airport, which we would like to further deepen. With daily flights to Athens and the new route to Thessaloniki, we are offering our passengers even more choice. Germany remains a key growth market for us, and we see great potential in further strengthening the connection between our two countries.”
Greece: A Popular Year-Round Destination with Many Facets
Greece is one of the most sought-after destinations from Düsseldorf. In addition to well-known vacation islands such as Rhodes, Crete, and Corfu, city breaks are also growing in popularity. Athens is considered the cultural heart of the country, where ancient history and modern city life blend in a striking way. The Acropolis, the old town of Plaka, museums, and contemporary neighborhoods shape the diverse character of the metropolis.
Thessaloniki represents the cosmopolitan, youthful side of Greece. The city combines Byzantine heritage, creative energy, and Mediterranean joy of living. Along the waterfront promenade, featuring the White Tower—the city’s landmark—cafés and taverns line the streets, conveying the relaxed lifestyle of Northern Greece. At the same time, Thessaloniki is a major destination for travelers visiting family or friends in Central Macedonia.
