Riga International Airport to handle one of the world’s biggest aircrafts – AN 124 Ruslan

On 28 and 29 January at Riga International Airport one of the biggest aircrafts in the world - AN 124 Ruslan – will be handled. The heavy air cargo charter company Ruslan International with the transport aircraft AN 124 will take a 46-tonnes gas generator from Riga International Airport.

The cargo transport aircraft AN 124 is expected to arrive at Riga International Airport on 28 January at 16.00. The outsize cargo will be handled with special transport equipment applicable for payload of this size. On 29 January at 11.00 AN 124 will depart form Riga International Airport to Bukhara, Uzbekistan.

Krišjānis Peters, Chairman of the Board of Riga International Airport, said: „Since restoration of the independence of Latvia cargoes of this size have not yet been transported via RIGA International Airport. The choice of this transport route proves Latvia's ability to compete in cargo transit as a country that can provide intermodal transport and logistics services. The Latvian companies can offer efficient and competitive port, road and rail haulage services as well as air traffic with RIGA International Airport being one of the most convenient transport hubs in the European Union for flights to the Far East and Asian countries."

K.Peters added: „Handling of one of the world's biggest aircrafts is a significant event for Riga International Airport that will help us attract further interest of cargo charter companies to put Riga on the maps of their transport routes."

 Ruslan International unites two air cargo charter companies - Antonow Airlines and Volga-Dnepr Airlines, operating 17 AN 124-100 Ruslan aircrafts. In total 56 aircrafts of  AN 124 type have been built.

            Maximum load carrying capacity - 120 tonnes

            Cargo deck volume - 750 m³

            Maximum cargo dimensions - 36.5 x 6.4 x 4.4m

            Range with 120t payload - 4650 km

AN 124 Ruslan is used for transportation of outsize cargo of various types, such as new railway trains, helicopters and even the world's largest mammal - whale.
