Why Are Flights to Germany More Expensive This Winter?

Six months out, economy fares on routes to and from Germany are pointing up for the winter ahead.
Using RDC Aviation’s Apex Fares Data, we looked at the net fare (excluding taxes) on sale 180 days before departure:
🔹 Winter 2026/27 is priced at €141, 15% above last winter
🔹 Summer 2026 averaged €139, 7% below 2025, with many of those fares on sale before fuel prices rose
🔹 Q4 2026 is up 9% and Q1 2027 up 17% on a year earlier
🔹 Long-haul leads: North America +32% and Asia +22% this winter, against +3% for Europe
Higher fares don’t necessarily mean more viable routes. Much of the rise probably reflects fuel costs as airline hedges roll off, and it may come with lower load factors and less profitability. Fewer departures and the reversal of Germany’s aviation tax increase are also part of the picture.
