Facts (Overview)
Dubai-based Emirates Airline (www.emirates.com) is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world, and has received more than 400 international awards for excellence. Emirates is wholly-owned by the Government of Dubai, but is recognised as an international airline of the UAE. The airline is run on a commercial basis and receives no financial support, financial guarantees or protection from the government, which operates an unconditional open skies policy in Dubai. Despite this, Emirates has been profitable in all but its second year of operation.
Emirates now flies to 125 destinations in 74 countries. The airline reported a net profit of USD$0.4 billion for the last fiscal year. Emirates operates 177 wide-body Airbus and Boeing aircraft, with a new aircraft arriving every four to six weeks. It currently has orders for an additional 226 aircraft, worth more than USD$62 billion.
