CBG Passenger Terminal Upgrade

Cambridge Airport unveils £1m passenger facilities upgrade

4 March 2013 Cambridge Airport’s Managing Director, Steve Jones, today confirmed the regional UK airport is dramatically enhancing its existing passenger handling facility as part of a strategic development to the city’s regional airline traffic capabilities.  “We have a fantastic location just minutes from Cambridge and a short hop from another of Britain’s fastest growing cities, Peterborough, while we are readily accessible from the entire eastern region of the UK – but our facilities need to keep pace, which is why we’re improving them now”.

The improved terminal brings about a significant facility improvement valued at approximately £1million to the existing site and footprint.  New facilities will include a spacious check-in area with all new airline handling IT infrastructure, a new passenger security screening area, a departure lounge with VIP lounge area, coffee shop and bar, as well as revised immigration and arrivals facilities.

“We’re not getting bigger we’re getting smarter”, commented David Surley – Head of Business & Route Development.  “We’ve welcomed extremely successful new leisure destinations this year, handled umpteen charter flights for conferences, sports teams, specialist groups and many more diverted flights from other UK airports”.  The new facilities will be a welcome change to passengers using the airport as the demand for international and domestic air travel from and to the Cambridge area and wider region has increased dramatically in recent times.  “Demand to some destinations has increased considerably in the last year and with a major swing towards business travel”, said Surley. “Cambridge is now a top 10 UK business destination and some markets have demonstrated growth of between 35 and even over 60% year on year, which represents enormous value to our extremely buoyant regional economy”.

All work on the Airport’s improved passenger facilities is expected to be completed by the end of April with the summer’s main flying programme taking off again in May and more new routes expected.  The first passengers enjoying the new look facilities are expected to be those destined for the popular holiday island of Jersey with tour operator jerseytravel.com.  Naples is another new destination confirmed for Summer 2013 with Italian specialist, Newmarket Holidays.
