Vitória Airport Launches Construction of Solar Energy Complex
Vitória Airport officially began construction this Wednesday (1) of a solar power plant complex that will provide renewable energy to the airport site. Alongside Macaé Airport and Natal Airport, also operated by Zurich Airport Brasil, Vitória Airport will become part of a pioneering group of Brazilian airports set to achieve energy self-sufficiency.
With R$20 million in investments, the project is expected to take eight months to complete and will generate approximately 100 direct and indirect jobs. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by local authorities, representatives of Espírito Santo's business community, and executives from Zurich Airport Brasil.
The complex will have an installed capacity of 5,787 kWp and will consist of four solar power plants, totaling approximately 8,000 solar panels. Electricity generation capacity is estimated at 769 MWh per month, enough to supply around 5,000 households, based on an average monthly consumption of 150 kWh. Located across three areas within the airport property, the complex will occupy a total area of 7.2 hectares.
“This project reinforces our commitment to investing in solutions that create value for the airport, the community, and the environment. Vitória's solar power plant complex represents a concrete step forward in how we envision long-term airport operations,” said Artemis Papanika, Chief Operations Officer of Zurich Airport Brasil.
The construction of the solar complex is part of a broader set of environmental initiatives developed by Zurich Airport Brasil. Since 2024, Vitória Airport has operated a system that supplies clean and renewable electricity to aircraft on the ground. In just over two years of operation, the initiative has prevented the emission of approximately 6,600 tons of CO₂, equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration of around 51,000 Atlantic Forest trees.
Additional sustainability efforts focus on waste management. Approximately 95% of the waste generated at the airport is diverted from landfills, corresponding to about 123 tons of waste between January and May of this year.
