Traffic at Bordeaux Airport rose by +5% in January.

Bordeaux Airport recorded a +5% increase in traffic for the first month of 2016, compared to January 2015. Traffic rose to 330.150 passengers during the month, including 213.000 on domestic flights (+3.4%) and 117.150 on international flights (+8%). Traffic maintained excellent growth despite the air traffic controllers’ strike at the end of January, and was also sustained by the many congresses held in Bordeaux. Best growth in 2015, Bordeaux Airport maintains a growth rate well above the average for major French regional airports.

Growth reached +7.1% for scheduled international traffic with the strongest gains by Barcelona (Vueling) +63.8%, Dublin (Aer Lingus) +62% and Milan (easyJet) +35.3%, Casablanca +29% (Royal Air Maroc and Jetairfly), Amsterdam +25% (KLM and easyJet) and Lisbon +17.4% (TAP and easyJet).

Scheduled domestic traffic maintained its growth with +2.9%. The month was however affected by the by air traffic controllers’ strike, mainly the Orly shuttle (14 daily flights), resulting in a 0.9% decrease in traffic. The Charles de Gaulle hub was up +6.6%. Ajaccio in Corsica (Volotea) posted the strongest growth in the country (+96%), followed by Brest (Volotea and Chalair) with +65%. Note also the first 100 passengers travelling to Montpellier since 25 January, a new route which has just been launched by the French regional operator, Chalair.

The growth of low-cost flights (up +12.2%) was driven by positive results for most airlines: Aer Lingus +61.8%, Vueling +63.8%, Volotea +23.3% and easyJet +13.3%.
