The three-millionth passenger within a year has been served at the Katowice Airport.

On Monday of 21 December 2015 for the first time in the history of Katowice Airport the three-millionth passenger has been served in the total annual passenger traffic. The special passenger is Ms Monika Dobrakowska, who flew to Katowice from London-Luton on board of Wizz Air Airbus A320.

Artur Tomasik, the CEO of Upper Silesian Aviation Group has commented on the event as follows: The three-millionth passenger served during the year is an important step in the development of Katowice Airport. It is the result of consistent cooperation with airlines and tour operators, as well as the fact that in recent years we practically built the airport from scratch. Our partners appreciate our high-quality infrastructure. Katowice Airport is not only the location of one of the largest bases of Wizz Air, but also large bases of the biggest charter carriers on the Polish market, meaning Enter Air, Small Planet Airlines and Travel Service. Such a large number of based airlines is possible with a proper number of aircraft stands that were established in recent years and developed facilities for technical maintenance of aircrafts. In addition, the new runway put into operation in May this year has opened new possibilities for the use of long-distance flights, which is confirmed by the announcement of direct charter flights to the Dominican Republic starting from July 2016.

In 2015 the network of Katowice Airport flights included more than ninety routes. Travel from Katowice was provided on thirty-three airlines to sixteen countries in regular traffic, and on sixty airlines to fourteen countries in Europe, Africa or Asia in charter traffic. Wizz Air has an important position on the regular flight market; the three-millionth passenger flew to Katowice on board of an aircraft belonging to this airline.

Gabor Vasarhelyi, Communications Manager at Wizz Air, said: We are excited that we have our part in this great event – serving the three-millionth passenger during the year at the Katowice Airport. Since the beginning of its operations, Wizz Air has been strongly connected with the Katowice Airport. Our first flight was made from here in 2004, and since then we have been expanding our network of flights from the Katowice Airport. Wizz Air currently bases 5 aircraft here, employs nearly 200 staff and offers 26 low-cost flights to 13 countries.

2015 will be a record year in the history of the Katowice Airport. The airport will serve 3.05 million passengers in the total traffic, which is about 360 thousand more than in the previous year. This result will be improved in 2016, as the network of regular and charter flights will once again be the most developed in history and will include about 100 routes.
