The 6-millionth passenger of Sofia Airport arrived today

On the eve of Christmas holidays, the biggest international airport in Bulgaria achieved its second record for a year.

It took only a month and a half to service 1 million passengers and Sofia Airport welcomed its 6 000 000th passenger today.

Violina Trencheva is the lucky one, who arrived on a Wizz Air flight from Dortmund. Dortmund as a destination was added to Sofia Airport flight schedule in 2008 and since then its daily operations has resulted in 753 106 passengers being served so far.

At the official ceremony under the accompaniment of a jazz band from the National School of Music “Lyubomir Pipkov”, the Board of Directors of Sofia Airport welcomed the 26-year old lucky lady and granted her a gift voucher valid for the duty-free shops at the airport. Afterwards a dedication cake was cut.

“We are very happy that for the first time in the history of a Bulgarian airport in one and the same year two records have been set. A month and a half after welcoming the 5 000 000th passenger, today we celebrate the arrival of the 6 000 000th passenger. The result achieved proves not only the excellent work of the Sofia Airport team, but also stands for our good partnership with airlines, ground handling companies, border police, customs and other organizations”, pointed out Mr. Vladimir Rapondzhiev, Executive Director of Sofia Airport.

On behalf of Wizz Air the passenger was gifted a travel voucher.

“As a leading airline in Bulgaria we are very happy to celebrate this remarkable milestone in Sofia Airport’s history – 6 000 000 passengers achieved in only one year! This is a record for the airport and with our 32 destinations served so far from Sofia Airport and with other 4 forthcoming in March 2018, we are proud to be part of this success”, said Gabor Vasarhelyi, Manager Corporate Communications in Wizz Air.

Attracting more passenger and freight traffic is among the core goals of Sofia Airport management and its fulfillment is a year-round duty. For a period of only 10 months, i.e. Jan. – Oct., 2017, passenger traffic marked a 36% increase.

Sofia Airport’s winter schedule offers convenient flights with 36 airlines to more than 60 European and Middle-Eastern destinations. By the end of the year two new seasonal routes will be added – Easy Jet to Edinburg twice weekly and Nordwind to Moscow Sheremetyevo (SVO).
