Aalborg Airport off to a strong start in 2026
The peak season for Danes planning their holidays is well underway, and an ice-cold January further boosted demand for warm-weather getaways in the sun. This was also evident at the fourth edition of the Aalborg Travel Festival, where several travel agencies reported record-high sales of spring and summer holidays. While the terminal was filled with enthusiastic guest for the travel fair, flights to and from Aalborg were also operating with high load factors throughout the month, resulting in a significant increase in passenger numbers compared with January 2025.
Aalborg Airport has made a strong start to the new year, welcoming a total of 104,253 passengers travelling to and from the airport in January — an increase of 12.6% compared with January last year.
Travel Activity from Aalborg Airport continues to grow
The upward trend in domestic travel continued into the new year, with an impressive increase of more than 34% compared with January 2025. However, this strong growth should be seen in the context of unstable weather conditions, which have particularly affected flights to and from Amsterdam. As a result, some passengers chose to travel via Copenhagen instead, continuing their onward journeys from there.
“January 2026 was an exceptionally cold and snowy month in Denmark, while also being a time of high travel activity — including ski holidays, sunny breaks in the Canary Islands, and the new Hurghada route, which has been sold out on several departures. At the same time, winter conditions have proved particularly challenging across Europe, which is why we have seen a decline in international traffic. Part of this traffic has shifted, with passengers travelling via Copenhagen rather than Amsterdam. We now hope to see a return to more normal weather conditions, and we look forward to the continued winter and spring programme as well as upcoming route announcements,” says Airport CEO Niels Hemmingsen.
Record sales at Aalborg Travel Festival 2026
On Sunday 25 January, the Aalborg Travel Festival was held once again, marking the fourth time Aalborg Airport has hosted Northern Jutland’s largest travel fair — featuring more than 40 participating airlines and travel agencies.
“Once again, the strong Danish appetite for traveling was at the centre of this year’s Aalborg Travel Festival, where sunny and warm destinations were in especially high demand on such an icy January day. Over the four years we have hosted our travel fair, the level of interest has been overwhelming — both from visitors and from the many exhibitors who have the opportunity to meet their customers face-to-face. That creates real value, and once again this year the event was a great success. Feedback from travel providers also confirms that a very large number of holidays were sold during the day,” concludes Niels Hemmingsen.
