Passenger development at Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport

In 2019, around 693,500 passengers used Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport. This corresponds to a decrease of 5.8 percent compared to 2018. The market, which was dominated by airline bankruptcies, prevented a better result. The occupancy of tourist flights increased further compared to the previous year.

With regard to the destinations, it can be seen that the lower number of flights to Mallorca contributed to the decline. “More passengers would only have been possible with permanent discounts. However, these cheap offers harm the sustainably operating airlines at our airport and that's why we made a conscious decision not to do so, ”comments Dr. Marc Cezanne, managing director of Flughafen Paderborn / Lippstadt GmbH, the development.

There are also bright spots. Antalya has developed excellently and shows a very positive trend with more than 200,000 passengers alone, which corresponds to an increase of 31.6 percent compared to the previous year. From June, Izmir will also have a second Turkey target for summer 2020. Regular Lufthansa flights, which are important for business travelers and transfer passengers, also saw stable development in 2019 with more than 163,000 passengers.

“2020 is unlikely to be an easy year for air traffic in Germany. Nevertheless, we will again offer an attractive flight program at the home port in order to continue to connect to important destinations and global air traffic, ”adds Dr. Cezanne added. However, rising kerosene prices, the continuing ban on flying the 737 Max aircraft and the increase in air traffic tax are likely to hamper development.

The number of flight movements at Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport was more than 37,000 in 2019 and is approximately 7.7 percent below the previous year's figure due to the decline in training flights.
