19,546 passengers crossed the tarmac at Charleroi airport in March 2021
Charleroi, 17 March 2021 – Brussels South Charleroi Airport welcomed 24,844 passengers during the month of February 2021. This represents a 96% fall in traveller traffic compared with 2020.
February is still marked by the ban on non-essential travel. This situation is having a huge impact on our passenger traffic, with the lowest traveller numbers since the first lockdown.
“The current health crisis is hitting the whole aviation sector hard. This is not without consequences for air travel, both in Belgium and internationally”, explains Philippe Verdonck, Brussels South Charleroi Airport’s CEO. “After the implementation of strict health measures within the airport, as well as the introduction of a testing centre for passengers returning from their travels, it is essential that we speed up the vaccination process so that we can gradually start allowing non-essential travel from Belgium”.
This trend will probably continue throughout March. The flights currently being operated are for essential travel, either for business or family reasons. Morocco, Romania and Turkey were the flagship destinations in February.
When it comes to the total number of commercial flights, the airport recorded an 81% reduction compared with 2020: 771 flights in February 2021 compared with 4,037 in February 2020.
Our partner Air Corsica has announced the launch of a new route from Charleroi to Figari. This destination will be available as of 22 May 2021. There will be two flights a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays.
